Every time I see this bulb it makes me happy. My dad always grows paperwhites for Christmas. Today was basically a worthless day. I read some old emails from someone I don't speak to anymore. This just reminded me how pointless and ridiculous relationships are, and made me really sad.

My landlady is an amazingly, lovely, kind person. She was cleaning out the fridge to prepare for Thanksgiving and decided to cook up a chicken that had been in the freezer for a while. This was a great day. The phones were finally quiet at the office, there was a puppy, there were chocolate chip cookies, and I came home to this baby in the oven.

So it has been a long time since I was updating regularly. Which is kind of a shame. I blame this partially on laziness, partially on lack of consistent internet, and partially on just having one of those years that maybe you don't want to memorialize every day. I went to New York for a while and hardly took any pictures just because there are things you want to remember in the concrete, and there are things you just want a ghost of an impression of a memory left. I guess I've gotten back to the point where I want something more concrete again.

The following posts are sort of the back log from the times over the past year where I have tried to start taking pictures regularly again.

After leaving Double Rainbow I drove around in the country where all of the mansions are. This one had an enormous lights display. It was a good time.

During the day I had lunch with some of my dad's friends. We went to the Sunshine Cafe for lunch and it was totally and utterly fabulous. In the evening I went to see No Country for Old Men, which has scenes which were shot in many of my favorite hang out spots. Including the Village Inn on Central (pictured).

New Mexican tradition is that on Christmas Eve people put out little bags with sand and candles in them. It's really pretty, but I don't really remember where this tradition came from. Some people use these fake luminarios and I don't approve of those.

The Pinata proved to be rather sturdy. I think I will keep this piece of it as a candy dish. I also really like the re-arrangement of the furniture. We now have a sitting room which is very pleasant to sit in for getting down to finals. Also, notice the fascinating assortment of magazines on the coffee table- Men's Health, O, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter...man these kids are cool.

I went to go see my housemate in this dance exhibition thing. Tap dancing is so cool, yet hilarious. It's kind of weird to me how many people actually do tap dancing. But there were also some really amazing break dancers and belly dancers and swing. I kind of want to learn swing. I kind of want to learn to dance for general party not looking like an idiot dancing.

When I got home one of my friends was using the kitchen for holiday baking. Mmmm cookies. I cooked up some glue and went to work on the pinata. It looks pretty good so far. Kind of like a panda. We're discussing putting Jeff Goldblum's face on it.

I went to see Measure for Measure because I was curious to see whether they would make it a comedy or a drama. Personally, I found it kind of dull. My favorite part was the fascist themed costumes. After the show we hosted a hookah party in the bathroom because the bathroom is the only room in the house without a smoke alarm. It was kind of awesome and hilarious sitting on a pile of blankets and pillows with the mood lighting eating donuts, smoking hookah, and talking about political correctness.

Well, I stayed up until 3:30 in the morning last night and then for whatever reason I woke up around 9:00. Which was kind of nice because I had the house to myself and it was quiet and sunny and nice. I actually had time to read a book for fun (gasp!). Although I've had to start reading comic books and graphic novels instead of longer fiction. It's nice to be able to read an entire book within an hour. I sat in the dining room and read and it was amazing.

I got a book called Skin Deep by Charles Burns as my special treat for the weekend. It was amazingly good. I've heard of his other book called Black Hole. But this one was truly great. My soulmate will also like Charles Burns. It was hilarious trying to find graphic novels in the library. Half of them are in the art library and half are in the normal library. Within the art library they are distributed amongst three different locations.

I was glad for Friday. It is going to be a weekend with lots of paper writing. Which is kind of sad. So right after comics class I went to Azariah's to work on said paper. I love doing work there so much.

For the film series we were supposed to be showing Hell House (a documentary about a Christian haunted house) but the distributor never sent us the movie. Instead everyone came over and we watched Storytelling at our place. It was a seriously great movie. Definitely check it out if you have the opportunity. I think my soulmate will have to be a fan of Todd Solondz. A few people I don't really know came over and we ended up having really intense great conversation. It was so good that we ended up just skipping the radio station party.

That was an excellent sandwich. I needed a super fun pick-me-up night because I spent 6 hours doing work in the library. My friends came over and I ate sammich and watched Ghost World. Ghost World is one of those movies that gets better every time I watch it.

After the movie we were going to go to the Keep party. We couldn't get in and it was rainy. But we were dressed up like hipsters which was really fun. Really loud, packed parties are not fun. You cannot talk to anyone. We went home and turned off the lights and turned on the little glowing flower opera lights and the chile lights and we came up with band names. I think we will be the GhettoBaskets.

As a special treat for being so diligent this week I stopped by the art library and picked up a bunch of books on photography. Two art areas which I would like to learn more about are photography and architecture. The art library is so lovely and full of goodness. I need to make a point of stopping by there more often during lunch. They had some really cool looking periodicals all hidden in the back.

Went to the "final" Bucketkickers concert. It was in a much too small house filled with way too many people. But awesome people. I realized that I recognize or vaguely know nearly everyone at Bucketkickers concerts now. It rocked. The floors almost fell down.

I also put up a bulletin board so that I can find the pizza coupons.

Things ended. But it was ok. I got home at 4:00 a.m. and it felt good in a sad way.

We got a few new games to use with the Nintendo: Mario 3, and some Megaman games. There was a moment of despair when we couldn't get the Mario 3 cartridge to play. All we were getting was a pink screen. After some futzing I figured out that the spring wasn't in quite the right place so we used some coins to weigh down the cartridge. This is proof that a liberal arts education does indeed provide a basis for critical thinking and problem solving.

Grocery Store Time! Where I am finally able to catch up on the news while waiting to check out.

Tonight I went to see Anton in Show Business which is a play that two of my housemates have been working on. It was good. It kind of inflamed my desire to do a show myself. It's like my secret past that I did hundred of hours of theater in high school. But doing theater you meet lots of people who tend to be outgoing and gregarious and there is something to be said for that.

This is my new favorite spot in Mudd to do work. And I have spent a whole lot of time here lately. I prefer working on the third floor because it is super quiet. There are times when I want to kind of work and I go sit in the rainbow couches on the second floor, but when the work really needs to get done I must be far from distractions.

Also, I find sitting here reminiscent of being in an old school Nintendo game. Sometime I might come in late at night and re-arrange the blocks.

Tuesday 11/6/07 Theremin Concert

I went to see this band called Barbez, which I knew absolutely nothing about except that they have a theremin player and theremin is awesome. They were a really interesting band. There were guitars, drums, bass, theremin, and clarinet/sax. Instead of singing the vocals were a recording of someone reading poetry (which I kind of liked, but kind of didn't).

One thing that is kind of strange about Oberlin is that since it is a relatively small place you think you know everybody. And then you go to some random event and there are all of these people who you have never seen before. It's very intriguing. Where do all of these people come from that I've never seen them before?

Sunday was spent almost entirely in the library working on a paper. Writing about art is really really hard. Especially when it's medieval art of a religious nature. In terms of writing papers I think philosophy is the easiest, then English, then art history. It almost seems worthy of a paper to write about why this is.

I made some delicious pumpkin scones...for someone else's housemates. I figure that it can't hurt if you want someone to like you back to win over the people they live with.

We had seen banners for a horse race in the nearby town of New Russia and it sounded like a fun thing to do since none of us had ever been to one before. Since it was taking place after dark we figured it would be easy enough to find because there would be some very big lights. We found some very big lights. However, they were lighting up a racetrack for cars. Somehow stockcar racing just didn't seem as exciting as some exploring in rural Ohio so we drove to Wellington instead.

Wellington has a delightful little diner which is open relatively late on weekends (9:00-ish depending on how many customers). Great pie and super super cheap breakfasts served all day. The bad part about Saturday was that I had been expecting to hang out with someone who ended up calling me late to cancel. If you're going to cancel call someone earlier so that they're not all disappointed in addition to having nothing to do.

This morning was the first morning with a serious frost for me. Bleh, coldness. As it was a Friday it was X-Files night. I kept falling asleep though. For whatever reason I have been very sleepy this week. I also made some experimental pumpkin scones. They were excellent. Even though I used regular milk instead of buttermilk.

I love the random stuff that you find in the ground. Thursday was exciting because we went to Decafe for dinner. Mmmmmm sammiches. I also love that they have Blue Sky soda. Reminds me of home. After dinner I went to watch some Buffy. Oh Buffy.

I also met with one of my English professors to discuss doing a private reading. It's kind of the coolest thing ever. I pretty much get to read whatever I want. I'm working on trying to pick some sort of a theme. I was thinking Libertine writings would be pretty fun.

Since Oberlin is full of queer/commie/Jew/vegetarians from New York and the west coast there are frequent visits by local Christian groups to convert us.

The importance of seriously getting ahead on work was made very clear during midterms. I am trying to do more work in the library where I will be free of distractions. Notice the proper womb chair etiquette of leaving your stuff so that it's visible. This prevents others from unwittingly spinning your chair around thinking it's empty.

The Northeast is really boring to look at after a few hours. There's just trees along the road.

There were some things that I didn't do in Boston that I would have liked to. I wanted to see a movie at the restored historic movie palace, I want to go to the Garment District when it isn't mobbed with frat boys, Harvard art museum, apparently the Peabody museum in Salem is great, and also I want to wander around Cambridge more.

The parking at the Reading train station was a huge rip off and we ended up getting two vaguely unfair parking tickets. So, we paid for today's parking in entirely small change. Stickin' it to the man one nickel at a time.

We got off at the Lechmere stop and walked around Cambridge St. which was really cute and had lots of little places to eat. We also went to the mall because I had never been in a J. Crew or an Ambercrombie store before. There is a store in Cambridge that is renowned amongst students for Halloween costumes. So we went and it was crazy mobbed! It was a shame because I had really wanted to go that store. It looked really cool inside. You could buy clothing by the pound (.75 cents a pound).

For dinner we went to Malden again. There is a fabulous Vietnamese place there. Then we did some more apartment crashing which included pie and Star Trek.

Thursday 10/25/07 South Side and the Gayborhood

We had a slow start in the morning and ended up walking around the theater district. It took us a while but we found this trendy little neighborhood which was filled with expensive shops and puggles. Who would ever have thought that there could be so many puggles in such a small space.

For dinner we went out for a nice seafood dinner at Legal Seafood. I had swordfish and scallops for the first time and it was delicious. Afterwards we hung out at with a recent Oberlin grad who is putting up one of my friends for the trip. We were nerdy and it was fun.

Wednesday 10/24/07 The North End and MIT

The North End is the old Italian neighborhood in Boston. It looks like an old Italian neighborhood. But there was good food everywhere. We had a great lunch at a place called Artu and then Mike's Pastries had amazing connoli. This was pretty much the only time we did any historic site seeing. We were just walking around and came across this very old cemetery.

I went out to dinner with one of my high school friends who goes to MIT. We walked around some of the schnazzier buildings (the Gehry and one of the engineering libraries that reminded me of the end of 2001). After dinner we got kind of lost and then just walked around downtown. I finally went into one of the Dunkin Donuts. They are everywhere. Donuts are so delicious.

Tuesday 10/23/07 Indian Food

I can't really remember what we did on this day. We went into a hotel to ask for a good place to eat and were directed to an amazing Indian restaurant for lunch. I think this was the day that we went down to Harvard and Davis Square.

I made everyone wait ridiculous amounts of time while I went kind of crazy in the GoodWill there. It was the worst organized thrift store I have ever been in. There would just be a racks and racks of pants with no organization by denim or size or anything. It certainly appealed to my OCD sensibility. They had a pretty good selection of records though.

Monday 10/22/07 Seals and Art

We thought about going to the Boston Aquarium but the tickets were $20 and I just didn't feel like spending that on watching fish. However, in the front of the aquarium is a tank with seals and they were feeding the seals.

Instead, we went to the Museum of Fine Art. My favorite things were the exhibit on Japanese prints of women warriors, the giant hall filled with old masters, and some of the modern paintings. It was particularly cool because there were some Velazquez portraits that I knew really well from seeing the slides all the time in a Spanish art course last year.

Sunday 10/21/07 The Boston University Area

We spent our first day in Boston hanging out in the Boston University area. We ate in the dining hall, which was deceptively large and attractive, but not actually any better than ours. The security required to get into the dorms is also kind of crazy. There were lazers, and sign in sheets, and security guards.

We walked around campus and a trendy shopping area. I convinced one of my friends to dress up in hipster clothes with me. But the bastards at Urban Outfitters wouldn't let us take pictures. We ate dinner at a really great restaurant called Angola Cafe and I criticized professional sports loudly in public (in Boston they are really into the Red Sox).

Saturday 10/20/07 Driving to Boston

I was up until 4:30 in the morning and then I had to get up at 9:00 so we could be off for our expected 12 hour drive. I think my roommate was relieved that I came home and that she didn't have to hunt me down.

The drive wasn't bad at all. I didn't sleep at all in the car. There was foliage turning colors and we stopped for dinner at a Friendly's in Chickapee, MA. It was too busy to get into any of the other crappy restaurants around there. Friendly's really sucks. They have 'classic American family favorites' type food done greasy but not in the good way. Denny's is far superior.

It felt so good to hand in my last paper for art history. Then I was all stress free for the rest of the day. In the evening I went to see Across the Universe and had a really really really great night out. I started watching Girl on the Bridge, but after the first twenty minutes I was overcome by distraction. The best kind of distraction.

Thursday 10/18/07 Depths of Midterms

This was a particularly horrible and intense and sickly midterms for me. This is from the flashcards that I was making for my neuropharmacology exam. I also had two papers and a short paper earlier in the week. By Thursday I was just waiting for noon on Friday.

Sunday 10/14/07 Sad Sunday

Today was my grandmother's funeral (which was the reason that I came home for the weekend). I didn't find it to be sad at all. It was just such a public thing and I guess going to the interment was so much more poignant to me.

The funeral wasn't until the afternoon so I went for a long drive to get the New York Times. It was a beautiful sunny day. My cat just looked so adorable sitting outside that I needed to take about a thousand pictures of him.

I lounged around with my dad today. This is a large crucifix I made junior year of high school. It's in the front room of our house and I think a lot of people initially think we're super Catholic because of it.

I hung out with my friend Coco and we had a little illegal fun and then went jaunting. We stopped in Harold's for some snacks along the way. I'm so glad that they're open 24 hours.

Thursday 10/11/07 Airport Books

I had some time to kill so I browsed through the book shop in the Houston airport. Houston has an extremely dull airport. I am one of those people who will read a book just because I like the jacket design. Half Life was my favorite in terms of looks, but the story looked kind of lame. I was excited because not only did Milan Kundera publish a new book, but it was in the airport book store! Who would have guessed? I love the cover of his new book.

Also, I really enjoy the Best American Non-Required Reading series but why did they pick Sufjan Stevens to be the guest editor? Not that he strikes me as having bad taste per se...just, of all the people you had to pick Sufjan Stevens? I just imagine that he would be so earnest and thoughtful in a cliche and not really that interesting sort of way. He strikes me as the sort of guy who loves Robert Frost but who has never read Rimbuad. Basically, my problem with Sufjan Stevens is that he ain't got no soul. I would infinitely rather read stuff picked out by anyone from Of Montreal.

Wednesday 10/10/07 the Yes Men

Admittedly, I didn't give Tuesday its full dues. Tuesday was amazing in its own way. But unfortunately for the general public it was not amazing in a way that I would publish on the internet. Except that it was the last warm night and we played badminton outside.

Wednesday I saw the Yes Men who are not a band but a group of activists. My favorite activists ever. They do some really hilarious hoax stuff. Mainly they showed clips from the movie they are working on. But it was awesome if only because the entire hall was filled with people. Standing room only.

The picture is my newly completed bedroom wall and has nothing to do with the Yes Men.

Tuesday 10/9/07 The Of Montreal Concert

The first band was MGMT and they were a really good band and they all looked super young, they just weren't danceable in the least. The next opening band was Grand Buffet and they were a white guy hip hop duo and they were my favorite. They actually had some stage presence and they were completely danceable. I just don't get the point of seeing a band live if you can't dance to them and they have no stage presence.

By the time Grand Buffet had finished the space was getting really hot and crowded which was kind of exciting in itself although it was pretty suffocating. Of Montreal came on and they had a totally hilarious and awesome show with bizarre flash animations and people in tiger masks and it was totally awesome. Basically, it was like watching Velvet Goldmine in the midst of a laser show in a sauna with lots of reverb (it was a gym after all). I also decided not to be a complete pansy and I went and danced with someone who I "want to get to know better" if only because the singer was on stage with no clothes except a silver scarf, little shorts, and fishnets.
